Living Homeless
There's no hobo job. If your character doesn't own a house, you're homeless, and the whole street-life system switches on. Buy a house (through a real estate agent) and it switches off. Sell it and it comes back. /hobocheck re-checks right now.
The basics
/hoboopens your street-life menu: status, crafting, shelter, clothes./hobostatusshows your rank and skills.- 20 ranks, from Street Rat to King of the Streets. Four skills level as you use them: Begging, Scavenging, Charisma (better prices), and Survival.
- All street income is capped at $8,000 an hour.
Ways to make money
| Hustle | How it works |
|---|---|
| Begging | You need a cardboard sign: craft one from a cardboard box and a marker at the crafting spots (Skid Row, Olympic Freeway, Vespucci Beach). Type /beg near a red light and cars roll up. Outcomes are give, yell, ignore, or a cop. /autobeg switches to manual, where you press E on a car or person. |
| Write a good sign | /hobosign lets you write your own message, and people actually read it. Words like veteran, kids, hungry, sick, and work earn sympathy. Drug or drink jokes cost you, and insults bring yelling and cops. /begodds shows your current odds. |
| Pick your spot & time | Rich areas (Rockford Hills) give more than poor ones (Davis). Morning and evening rush hours pay best, and late night is thin and full of cops. Rain earns pity. Looking rough helps, and looking too clean hurts. |
| Begging box & busking | Place a begging box and people drop change in it. Play a busking guitar within 10 m of your box for the best payouts of all. |
| Scavenging | Search any dumpster, trash bin, or tent. Each spot takes 5 minutes to refill, and sometimes another hobo takes offence. |
| Cans & bottles | Pick them up off the ground near hobo camps. Sell at the Recycling Center: $1 a can, $2 a bottle. |
| Windshield washing | Walk up to a stopped car. $3–35, or they wave you off. |
| Pickpocketing | Look at an NPC and pick Pickpocket. Hit Space when the sweeping cursor is over a filled slot. If you fail, they run, swing at you, or walk off, with an 8% chance they call the cops. |
| Odd Jobs Board | At the Skid Row camp. Three jobs rotate every hour, either trash pickups or deliveries, with a time limit. |
| Shady Dealer | A street fence who buys phones, cheap watches, lockpicks, and other small stolen goods. There's an 8% chance you get a star for it. Charisma raises his prices. |
Surviving
- Shelter: a shelter frame plus a tarp (craft them in
/hobo). Place it, sleep in it to lose stress, and use its 15-slot stash. It stays where you put it. - Campfire: a campfire kit plus 2 junk wood. Cook scraps into food, add wood to keep it burning, and stand near it to lose stress.
Things that happen while you beg
- Cops pull up. Half are nice and tip you $100. Half aren't, and you choose to run (2 stars) or surrender (jail).
- A limo stops if you've been begging for 2+ minutes straight: $75–250.
- Muggers: someone waves like they're going to give, walks over, grabs your cash, and runs.
