Tools & Where to Get Them
| Where | What |
|---|---|
| Lock Smith (south Los Santos) | Lockpick $150 • Advanced lockpick $600 • Slim Jim $175 • Slim Jim Pro $650 • Screwdriver set $200 • Drill $3,000 • Drill bit $250 • Crowbar $125 |
| The Fence (back alley, south LS) | Stock changes every day. Lockpicks, thermite, drugs, diamonds, electronic kits, Rolexes, gold bars. Everyone can see everything, but the good stuff won't sell to you until your criminal reputation is high enough. |
| Black Market | Launchers, C4, grenades, and mines. Black money only. |
| Arms Dealer (docks) | Unregistered rifles, extended mags, optics, suppressors. Cash, no licence, nothing registered to you. |
| Ammunation | Legal guns. They need a weapon licence and are registered to your name. |
Petty Theft
Low risk, low pay. Good for when you're broke.
| What | How | Take | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hold up a local | Aim a gun at an NPC. They put their hands up and kneel, and you rob them. | $10–20 cash, often a phone or Rolex | Some run, some fight back, some are armed. Sometimes they call the police. |
| Smash a vending machine | Look at a machine and break in (5 seconds). | $80–220 | Loud. Instant 2 stars. 5 minutes before that machine can be hit again. |
| Pick a soda machine | Lockpick minigame on a soda machine (20 seconds). | $5–50 and a drink, rarely a USB | 60% chance of a police call. 30-minute cooldown. |
| Break a parking meter | Look at a meter and break it open (4 seconds). | $15–45 | Low. 2 minutes per meter. |
| Mailboxes | Bring a hammer. Break open a letterbox or postbox, take the mail, then open it. | Mail. About 1 in 4 letters has something inside, like a credit card. | The hammer wears out. |
| Pickpocketing | Homeless characters only. See Living Homeless. | Cash and items | 8% chance of a cop call if you fail. |
Stealing Cars
- Most cars are unlocked. Only about 20–40% of parked or driven cars are locked, depending on the type.
- Carjacking: point a gun at a driver for about 7 seconds and the car is yours.
- Locked car, three ways in:
- Smash the window. Look at the driver's door. No tool needed, but it sets off the alarm, adds stress, costs honor, and alerts the police.
- Slim Jim. Quiet. Press R or look at the door, then play the minigame.
- Lockpick. 40% chance a normal lockpick breaks, 20% for an advanced one.
- No keys? Sit in the driver's seat and press H to search for them (10–20 seconds, about a 55% chance). Otherwise hotwire it.
- L locks and unlocks a car you have keys for.
- Never run in a police car. They all have a GPS tracker, and the police always know where it is. Pull it with a screwdriver set (12 seconds, and only while no officer can see you).
Chop Shop
- Talk to Josef by the scrapyard in the Grand Senora Desert and pick Start Chop Shop.
- You get a search area on your map. Find the car they want and steal it.
- Bring it back and chop it: doors, hood, wheels, trunk. Each part gives 8–12 of a crafting material (metal, plastic, copper, iron, aluminium, steel, glass).
- Finish the car for $810–2,190 cash.
Scrapyard
The scrapyard next door keeps a list of cars it wants. Bring one on the list and it gets scrapped for materials. Cars someone owns don't count.
Robberies & Heists
Convenience stores
- Walk inside and aim a gun at the clerk. Holding the aim for a moment counts. A quick sweep or aiming through the window doesn't.
- The clerk reacts. They either comply, go for the alarm (1 in 5), or pull a gun from under the counter (about 1 in 7).
- They empty the till into a cash bag on the floor ($250–800). You have to pick it up, and anyone else can grab it too.
- The safe: in some stores you hack a network box out back to get the keypad code. In the others you pick the safe's lock. Either way it's a skill check, and messing it up trips the alarm. The safe pays $900–1,800.
- Get out. If the clerk is still alive at the counter, they call the police the moment you walk away. Bystanders may call too. Aim at them and they drop the phone and run.
15 minutes between any two store robberies, 45 before the same store can be hit again. Sandy Shores Liquor Ace is till-only.
House burglary
- Get the job from one of the contacts (Mirror Park, or by the airport).
- You must be wearing a mask, and you need a lockpick to get in.
- Search the house. Big loot like TVs, microwaves, paintings, and safes has to be carried, and you can't run while carrying it. Sell it to the buyer.
- Every house levels you up, and higher levels find better loot.
Jewelry store (Vangelico)
- You need an electronic kit to hack the doors (it's used up) and a shotgun or SMG to smash the cases. Pistols won't do it.
- Loot: Rolexes, diamond rings, gold chains. Sell them at the Pawn Shop.
- 45 minutes before the cases restock.
Armoured truck
- Talk to the dealer in East Vinewood. It costs $500 from your bank to start.
- A Stockade truck spawns and drives off. It doesn't stop for anything, and the guards inside are armed with pistols, shotguns, and rifles.
- Stop it, put a sticky bomb on the back doors, and wait 30 seconds for it to blow.
- Loot: $250–450 black money, sometimes a security card. Get too far from the truck and the job fails. 45-minute cooldown.
Banks
- Bring a drill, drill bits, thermite, a laptop, and a USB device.
- Hack the keycard reader, burn through doors with thermite, drill the deposit boxes, and grab cash and gold off the trolleys.
- This is the loudest thing you can do. Expect a big wanted level.
Gruppe Sechs vans
A guard's van is a rolling bank. With an advanced lockpick, 20 seconds on the rear doors gets you 60% of the bags inside. The police are alerted when you start.
Selling What You Stole
- Pawn Shop (east Los Santos): buys gold chains ($1,000–2,000), diamond rings ($750–1,000), Rolexes ($2,500–3,000), laptops ($2,500–3,000), phones and tablets ($250–300), gold ($5,000–8,500), and diamonds ($2,500–7,250). It will also melt gold chains into gold bars.
- Shady Dealer: small street goods, for homeless characters. See Living Homeless.
- Wash black money with the guy outside the Diamond Casino: $500–20,000 per wash, he keeps 25%, and you wait 15 minutes between washes.
- Carry loot in a duffle bag. While you have one, your HUD shows what everything inside is worth.
Drugs
- Weed: buy seeds from the Seed Dealer, plant, water, harvest, then dry, bag, or roll it. Four strains, and quality matters (low, medium, high, exotic).
- Labs: meth, weed, and coke labs are hidden around the map. Set up equipment inside and cook.
- Selling: walk up to NPCs and sell hand to hand. A failed sale is a coin flip on a police call.
